Withdrawal

Withdrawal is an unwillingness to stay in hard conversations. This can look both physical (leaving the house, slamming the door, hanging up the phone) but it can also look emotional (checking out and not engaging).

Escalation

Escalation is a negative response that raises the level of disagreement. This often looks like raised volume, harsh tone, strong words – anything to raise the temperature of the disagreement.

Negative Interpretation

Negative interpretation is believing the worst about your partner’s motives or assuming your spouse is not for you.

Invalidation

Invalidation is putting down the thoughts, feelings, or character of your partner.

Application

We really hope these negative communication patterns help you better understand your own habits and become more effective in the way you communicate with your partner! We can’t wait to hear how it helps!
